THE WEDDING

2009

Inspired by the 15th century illuminated manuscript - Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, aka 'the king of the illuminated manuscripts'. It features a calendar of elaborately painted scenes of every day events. Commissioned by the Duke, it was painted by the Limbourg brothers who left it unfinished at their (and the Duc's) death in 1416. The Duke, Charles I de Savoie, commissioned Jean Colombe to complete the painting of the manuscript between 1485-1489. The MET (NYC) will have a similar book by the Limbourg's, The Belles Heures (Beautiful Hours) on display in March of 2010. 16 minute Lecture on the narrative composition by T. Husband.

In addition to rich colours and elaborate details about every day events, these 'books of hours' often featured repeated elements. In this case 2 churches - one plain, one elaborate and more importantly 2 females. Are they the same person? If not, who is the bride?

Recycled clothing fabric, hand dyed polyester trim (border - passementerie), found figures, embroidery, aluminum foil, oil pastels, earrings. Raw-edge applique, free motion quilting, serging, inkjet print.

ROOM FOR THREE

2009

One lone, found piece of fabric that looked like upholstery on the back of a chair inspired this almost all black & white composition.

The main panel was to have been the complete composition until I realized that, in my world, I would have a window to the outdoors. And how could I have visitors with only one chair? Because I like an indoor fire, I added one but then a stray bit of fabric landed on the composition. It looked like a rabbit ear. Voilà! my fireplace can be also a TV.

I had some help in terms of fabric donations as my collection is limited to what I find or buy in thrift shops. Did you know that B&W clothing is mostly that and often very high contrast too? And few are shades of grey?

Textile collage with recycled & new fabrics, zippers. Big hand raw edge applique, hand & machine stitching.

GUARDIAN OF THE FOREST 2

2006

Since this image was printed on untreated cotton, the inks will run if dampened and this is just what I did with a spray bottle. I like the effect - more like a painting than a photograph. You can also see the differences in quilting - stipple in the border for example as well colours in the border.

Free motion quilting, trapunto, inkjet printed on 100% cotton, controlled ink bleed. Mounted on a stretcher frame of acrylic painted canvas.

15.5" x 20.5"

GUARDIAN OF THE FOREST 1

2005

I visited this tree over a period of many years, until one spring it died. A cold call to the property owner, a cottage neighbour netted me an unusal deal: I get to chop the tree down; he gets a photo of what inspired me. The more interesting burls are now sculptures in my home garden. A smaller one went to a wood turner and is now a small bowl.

The image is a composite of 4 different photos: the background showing the actual tree on the left and 3 photos of the burl that captured my attention. The actual joins in the composite are emphasized by the composition. I printed 4 images, two on photographic paper, matted and framed - one as a gift for the original owner of the tree and the other hangs at my cottage and two on 100% cotton using my inkjet.

I completed two quilts, reasoning that the first would be the 'practice' piece giving me courage in doing the free motion quilting at which I was a true novice. If you look closely, you can see differences not only in the commercial fabric that frames the piece, but also in the style of quilting.
